10 Supplements to Take on Keto

MCT oil, exogenous ketones, and magnesium are just some of the supplements to take on keto.

“All for keto and keto for all!” That’s the mantra of The Three Musketoeers (Musk-keto-teers). Taking place between 1625 and 1628, The Three Musketeers follows D'Artagnan as he travels to Paris and befriends the three most formidable members of the French Monarchy's fighting company. Together, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and D'Artagnan drop the amount of carbs they consume down to 5% of their daily caloric intake. Soon after, the four friends experience accelerated weight loss; improved mood, focus, and energy levels; and reduced appetite.

The Three Musketoeers go on many adventures together, bare witness to the injustices of the age, and drop four pant sizes over the course of several months. Unfortunately, since their adventures occur nearly 400 years ago they don’t have access to modern day advances in nutritional science and are, therefore, missing out on supplements to take on keto. But you don’t have to!

Also, D'Artagnan is always insisting they start calling themselves “The Four Musketoeers” and Porthos is like, “Oh, and what’s next? A woman Musketoeer?! A brown Musketoeer?!” And D'Artagnan is like, “Yeah, I’d be okay with that,” and then Porthos says, “Yeah, what Grand Remplacment?!” And everyone’s mouths are agape because Porthos just outed himself as a supporter of the National Front. So they kick him out and remain The Three Musketoeers. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE, NO RACIST MUSKETOEERS!

  1. Magnesium

Just imagine The Three Musketoeers trying to foil Calendar Man’s or The Penguin’s plan to kidnap the King of France (The Three Musketoeers have the same rogue’s gallery as Batman). D'Artagnan is sneaking up on some baddies, starts coughing because he has a weekend immune system, and then can’t catch them because he gets a leg cramp. Why? According to Healthline, D'Artagnan may be suffering from a magnesium deficiency because beans and fruit, two foods rich in magnesium, are too high in carbs to eat while doing the ketogenic diet. He could hop on over to the nearest Walgreens and buy a 200 to 400 mg magnesium supplement, but there’s no Walgreens in 17th century france! Luckily, there are keto friendly foods that contain magnesium: spinach, avocado, swiss chard, pumpkin seeds, and mackerel to name a few.

  1. MCT Oil

If The Three Musketoeers needed some quick energy they could always take a tablespoon of pure medium chain triglycerides (MCT). Because of the length of the chains in this fat, MCT oil converts to energy quickly. It also prevents lactic buildup, which is good news if the Three Musketoteers have to spend 30 to 45 minutes fighting a masked villain and a bunch of henchmen, which, if you've ever seen an action movie, is usually how much time you spend in a final battle.  Fighting henchmen is an endurance sport for sure! Too much lactic acid can lead to sore, tired muscles. And, remember, The Three Musketoeers primary weapon is a sword. Their arms would be exhausted! “Euch, I am not swinging on another chandelier! Just take the King of France. Whatever.” That’s no attitude for a Musketoeer!

  1. Exogenous Ketones

Exogenous ketones are ketones that are created outside of the body. They’re another great source of energy. And, unlike caffein, there’s no crash afterwards. Just mix the exogenous ketones with a liquid of your choice that isn’t high in carbs (OBVIOUSLY), and you’ll experience improved mood, elevated energy, and focus. Exogenous Ketones are also great from when you’ve fallen out of ketosis and want to get back in without experiencing the symptoms of keto flu, which includes fatigue, irritability, headaches, and stomach aches. Although, not everyone experiences keto flu, a point Athos keeps bringing up and it’s like, “Dude, we get it, stop rubbing it in our faces, okay? We wanted a croque madame and it was worth it. WE SAVED THE KING OF FRANCE! GAWD!”

  1. Collagen Peptides

The Three Musketoteers spend a lot of time swinging from chandeliers and taking hard landings on brick floors. That takes a real toll on their joints! If you know why you should take collagen peptides, then you know that in the 17th century people were eating organ meat and connective tissue, which has fallen out of fashion in the present day. That’s too bad because collagen peptides decrease joint pain and stiffness by 32% and 44% respectively, making them one of the best supplements to take on keto. Collagen peptides also help preserve lean muscle mass when you're eating a low-protein diet for 15 days, which The Three Musketoteers often do because of how regularly they end up in dungeons for long stretches of time. “Thanks for rescuing us from Clayface’s dungeon, Aramis!” “No problem, guys, you rescued me from Bane’s dungeon just last month!”

Omega 3

  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The ratio of omega-3 fatty acids to omega-6 fatty acids is supposed to be 1:1, but if you know the 8 best keto friendly oils then you know that the average American diet has way more omega-6 fatty acids because of an overreliance on seed and vegetable oils. Luckily, a fish oil, krill oil, etc are great keto supplements because they can balance out your ratio, provide anti-inflammatory benefits, reduce heart disease risk, and mental decline. You can also use more olive oil or avocado oil in your cooking if you don’t want to buy supplements to take on keto.

  1. Fiber

The Three Musketoteers know what to do if you've got keto constipation or diarrhea: take fiber. Fiber helps your stool bulk up, which makes it easier for your colon to do its work. Take that constipation! Fiber also helps feed the bacteria that breaks down oils, which keeps you from having loose stool. Take that diarrhea! What the Three Musketoteers do is serve their meals on top of leafy greens so that they always have the right amount of fiber (they don’t have access to fiber in powdered forms). Be like the Three Musketoteers! Except for Porthos, the disgraced Musketoteer who believes in Grand Remplacement and PizzaGate, which, in 17th century France, is a conspiracy theory that the King of France has a fully operational gate made out of pizza. It has nothing to do with sex trafficking and everything to do with eating a high fat low carb diet. That’s right: Porthos never did keto!

  1. Electrolytes

When you start doing keto you end up losing a lot of water weight, which can lead to your sodium, potassium, and magnesium levels dropping. This can trigger symptoms of keto flu such as headaches, muscle cramps, fatigue, and stomach pain. The solution? Mineral-rich foods or electrolyte supplements! Dark leafy greens, nuts, avocados, and seeds are sources of magnesium and potassium that are keto-friendly. Just make sure to check the nutritional labels of any sports drink you consume because it may be high in sugars! “Or do what I do. Hi, I’m D'Artagnan. Keeping France safe makes me real sweaty, so I salt my water throughout the day to keep my electrolytes just right. And if you wanna do your part to keep France safe, practice inclusivity. We’re stronger together!”

  1. Creatine

If you know anything about fitness you’ve heard of creatine. It helps you make gains and get swole, ups how well you can exercise, and makes you stronger. It's been extensively researched, and has been shown to work! If you know why you should strength train, then you’ll know that creatine would help strengthen your core, improve your endurance abilities, and help improve your mood. Heightened endurance abilities are important if you know why you should do cardio on the keto diet: better mood, improved ability to handle stress, reduced blood pressure, and the release of human growth hormone (HGH) after 45 continuous minutes.  Why does HGH matter? Because it has anti-aging properties, improves muscle recovery, and helps maintain energy.

  1. Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA)

BCAAs have been demonstrated to reduce muscle damage, soreness, and general fatigue during exercise. That’s very important for the Three Musketoteers because they simply cannot escape their profession. And they’ve tried! Each of them at one point or another has assumed the identity of a bartender only to be outed for being a Musketoteer just like in A History of Violence. All because Alexandre Dumas refuses to stop writing novels about them! Their enemies buy those books up and just skim till they get to the part where Dumas puts in the address of the bar. Euch, he is the worst!

  1. Caffeine

This one may seem obvious, but what people take for granted is that caffeine is the active ingredient in most pre-workouts. Caffeine gives you improved mood, focus, and energy; it also reduces symptoms of hunger. It can take your keto diet to the next level, but it’s also not necessary because so many of its health benefits are symptoms of being on keto. That’s actually why the Three Musketoteers stay in ketosis: it’s like they’re always drinking coffee. Also, they’re fat adapted. If you know how to tell you’re fat adapted then you know that means that you can consume carbs and as soon as their bodies burn through all the glucose they’re back in ketosis. No waiting period; no risk of keto flu! IT NEVER ENDS FOR THE THREE MUSKETOTEERS EXCEPT FOR WHEN THEY ARE FREED BY THE SWEET RELEASE OF DEATH! Which may come later for them than for others do the ketogenic lifestyle’s life extending properties. EUCH, WHEN WILL IT END?! At least they’ll leave sexy corpses.
